After the bilateral meeting between President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw, the two leaders witnessed the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Food Security and Agriculture Cooperation at the Presidential Palace in the administrative capital of Nay Pyi Taw.

The MOU was signed between the Department of Agriculture of the Philippines and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

In a recent Harvest Festival in Barangay Triala, Guimba, Nueva Ecija, Mr. Henry Lim Bon Liong (CEO of SL Agritech Corporation) who is part of the Filipino business delegation, said that the MOU would entail the planting of hybrid rice on an initial 14,000 hectares of land in Myanmar using the Philippines’ technology on hybrid rice. Myanmar is presently pursuing a more expansive technology demonstration of hybrid rice.

Mr. Liong added that the administration declared to further support hybrid rice expansion in the Philippines, including the country’s assistance to help developing nations like Myanmar achieve an improved rice production through hybrid rice.

President Duterte is on the second and final day of his official visit to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
