GSIS, Pasay City
15 March 2016

President Benigno S. Aquino III paid tribute to the late Senate President Jovito “Jovy” Salonga in a necrological service held at the Teatro ng Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) in Pasay City.

The President condoled with the immediate family upon his arrival and viewed the remains of the late senator before the necrological service.

Former Senator Salonga, dubbed as the nation’s fiscalizer, served as the Senate President from 1987-1991 and topped all three senatorial elections in 1965, 1971 and 1987. He ran under the Liberal Party (LP) in all three elections.

He was one of the twelve senators who voted against the extension of the US military bases operation in 1991, breaking an 11-11 tie with his vote as Senate President.

He authored significant legislations such as Republic Act 7080 or the Anti-Plunder Law that was signed by President Corazon Aquino in 1991.

Former Senator Salonga passed away on 10 March 2016 at the age of 95 after succumbing to cardiac arrest at the Philippine Heart Center.
