President Benigno S. Aquino III’s Attendance
to COP 21 Climate Change Conference

President Benigno S. Aquino III joins other world leaders in Paris, France for the Conference of Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) from November 29 to December 1, 2015.

Dubbed as an ambitious pursuit to mitigate the effects of climate change, the conference this year aims to build a “Paris Climate Alliance” among world leaders that is capable of keeping the average global temperature rise below 2°C—a number which the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has identified being a crucial level to forestall the catastrophic effects of global warming caused by high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and greenhouse gas emissions.

During France President Francois Hollande’s state visit to the Philippines early this year, President Aquino and the French President both launched a joint call for a “universal, equitable and ambitious deal,” dubbed as the ‘Manila Call to Action on Climate Change.’ This joint call was made to raise public awareness ahead of the United Nations negotiation to take place in COP21.

A study in the recent Global Climate Risk Index revealed that the Philippines is one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

In the sidelight of his visit to France, President Aquino is also scheduled to witness the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and Vivapolis for the promotion of Philippines aerospace and aeronautics sector as a potential aircraft maintenance and production hub in the region.

After the three-day visit, the President will travel to Italy for an official visit.
