Exploring Ottawa’s neighborhoods should never be without a visit to the ByWard Market, located just east of Parliament Hill. This is where Ottawa began because in the early 1800s, it was home to Irish and French-Canadian labourers who worked on the Rideau Canal — and it was here that the foundations were laid for what has become Canada’s oldest operating farmers’ market. The ByWard Market is a district to find fresh produce, eclectic shops, boutiques and restaurants and other gourmet shops all year long.
