President Benigno S. Aquino III graced the groundbreaking ceremony of Sutherland’s pioneering Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) campus-type design facility that will generate 24,000 new jobs to fresh graduates.
Sutherland Chairman and CEO Dilip R. Vellodi said that the 5-hectare site, where building construction is estimated to cost US$ 50-million, is a commitment he made to President Aquino two years ago when they met in New York during the latter’s attendance to the United Nations General Assembly.
In his message, President Aquino assured Sutherland executives that much step is being done by the government in providing the IT-BPO sector with qualified workers. He said that 36,000 Filipinos have already benefitted from programs such as the Training for Work Scholarship Program under Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), where he allotted half a million pesos this year, and Business Processing Association of the Philippines’ (BPAP)Advance English Pre-Employment Training Program for students.
President Aquino is confident that by the time he steps down from office in 2016, revenues generated under the BPO sector will double from $11-billion to $25-billion, generating 4.5 million jobs from the current 640,000.
The President also congratulated Sutherland for having been awarded by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as Outstanding Employer Award for three years.
“You have found that it isn’t just more fun in the Philippines, but more profitable. Let me assure you: we will continue to endeavor to keep it this way,” the President said.
Sutherland currently has 13,000 employees in the Philippines, 70% of whom are located in six provinces like Camarines Sur, Davao, Clark, Tarlac, Taguig and Cavite.
