President Benigno S. Aquino III joined his fellow ASEAN Heads of State/Government and the ASEAN Secretary General in meeting United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Ban Ki Moon at the 6th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-U.N. Summit at the Myanmar International Convention Center.

The summit highlighted the political, security, economic and socio-cultural cooperation between the ASEAN member countries and the United Nations that resulted to the adoption of the ASEAN-U.N. Work Plan for 2015.

The leaders shared their views on how to promote further cooperation to address issues related to the United Nations Post-2015 Development Agenda and the ASEAN Community’s Post 2015 Vision such as poverty alleviation, narrowing the development gap, promotion of rural development and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Other topics included maintaining peace, security and sustainable development within the region and the world, the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law, enhancing the ASEAN-U.N. cooperation by promoting and protecting human rights, cooperation in environmental preservation, climate change and disaster management, the emerging threat of the Ebola virus, as well as the threats of extremism and fundamentalism particularly the extremist groups in Iraq and Syria.
