Working Visit and Participation in the JICA International Peace Conference
Tokyo and Hiroshima, Japan
24 June 2014

President Benigno S. Aquino III is set to visit Japan on Tuesday (June 24) to meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo and to deliver a keynote address at The Consolidation for Peace for Mindanao Conference in Hiroshima.

Prior to attending the conference in the afternoon, President Aquino will join the Prime Minister for a luncheon meeting at the latter’s official residence in Tokyo to discuss views on the recent regional developments and to discuss areas of cooperation to further enhance Philippines-Japan strategic partnership. He is also expected to visit the Hiroshima Memorial Museum before returning to the country on the same day.

Organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Research and Education for Peace of the Universiti Sains Malaysia, the peace conference will consolidate peace and development gains in Mindanao following the successful signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro on March 27, 2014.

The Japanese government, through JICA, has continued to play an active role in helping form the Bangsamoro Government and ensuring a lasting peace between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Philippine government. Just recently, JICA together with the Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) has initiated a month-long project for the MILF to undergo a peace-building practices and training seminar at the Hiroshima University.
