As part of the celebration of the 28th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, President Benigno S. Aquino III visited the town of Tanauan in the province of Leyte to look over various projects that were severely affected by super typhoon Yolanda that struck the province early November last year.
In Barangay Pago, the President inspected the permanent relocation site for more than 1,100 families that used to live in the no-build zones and were affected by super typhoon Yolanda. This location, which is the first of four sites, has a size of 2.4 hectares. It will accommodate 360 houses and is expected to be occupied by 50 families by March.
At the Tanauan I Central School, President Aquino inspected the newly-rehabilitated school building which was restored through the efforts of the Joint Support Group of the Republic of Korea and the Philippine Army 53rd Engineering Brigade. Among the 39 elementary schools in Tanauan, this has the biggest number of enrollees. Other schools are set to be repaired until November this year.
President Aquino also led the groundbreaking ceremony of the Tanauan Public Plaza located just across the Tanauan I Central School. A portion of the damaged area was turned into a mass grave site where more than 600 bodies were buried. The INJAP Group of companies funded the restoration of the plaza.
During the program, the President witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Permanent Relocation Sites in Barangays Pago and Maribi.
“Nais po nating kumustahin ang inyong kalagayan at siguruhing ang ating mga inisyatiba para tugunan ang inyong mga pangangailangan ay naipapatupad at umuusad na,” President Aquino said in his speech.
