As a gesture of his strong commitment to provide a better energy service, President Benigno S. Aquino III led the groundbreaking ceremony of the San Gabriel Power Plant, a newly-constructed natural gas plant in the country located in Sta. Rita, Batangas City.
In his speech, President Aquino said that the new power plant will not only help ensure a stable supply of energy but it can likewise empower the Filipino people. He said that in 2016, “we expect that the Luzon’s grid energy demand will have risen to around 11,000 megawatts from the present demand of 10,294 megawatts. This is why, from the onset, we have been working to lay down the groundwork for new plants to be put up.”
The President also mentioned that the effect of super typhoon Yolanda should serve as a lesson especially that the power deficit in the Visayas region slowed down the recovery efforts and attenuated the productivity of the affected communities. He added that the country should take greater measures and adapt with the aggravated effects of climate change.
“The situation also calls on us to reassess the sources of our power and their effects on the environment. In the coming years, we will make a concerted effort to use more efficient forms of energy generation and natural gas will play a starring role on this,” he added.
The San Gabriel Power Plant is a project of First Gen Corporation, a leading clean and renewable energy company in the country. As a world-class power corporation, its management system complies with the standards set by the International Organization of Standards (ISO) of Geneva, Switzerland.
