Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center 1
7 October 2013
President Benigno S. Aquino III and 20 Asia-Pacific Government/State Heads wore the traditional Indonesian attire made of Balinese cloth “endek” as they posed for the traditional APEC leaders’ family photo session. He was surrounded by Peru President Ollanta Humala, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, and Taiwan APEC envoy Vincent Siew.
Endek is a customary hand-woven cloth sewn by Balinese weavers using ikat resist dye technique. The peculiar design pattern is achieved by binding threads at certain points before treating it with dye.
Indonesia started the tradition of having leaders wear the host country’s traditional costume during the 1994 APEC Summit in Bogor, West Java.
