President Benigno S. Aquino III led the groundbreaking ceremony of the 26-kilometer long Mactan Circumferential Road widening project in Barangay Ibo, Lapu-Lapu City. The project routes are from Barangay Pajo to Barangay Poblacion, intersecting Cordova thru three component bridges — Gabi, Pilipog I and Pilipog II.

In his speech, the President emphasized that following the groundbreaking event are growing opportunities for the Cebuanos. “Ang mga proyektong tulad nito ang magdudulot sa atin ng panatag na loob, dahil klarong hindi ito bola; totoo at direktang makikinabang dito ang marami nating kababayan,” he said.

Costing P3.7 billion, the project aims to make the Mactan International Airport accessible to all world-class tourist destinations in Cebu. P300 million of the total amount was sourced from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) FY 2012 General Appropriations Act while the remaining P113 million was sourced from the Department of Tourism – DPWH Convergence Program in FY 2011. Excess funds will be used for future DPWH projects in 2014 or for any succeeding budgets.

Assisting President Aquino in lowering the time capsule were Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas III and DPWH Undersecretary for Regional Operations Romeo Momo.
