President Benigno S. Aquino III led the ceremonial launching of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) Flood Control and River Protection Convergence Project at Santisima Bridge in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

Presidential Adviser for Environment Protection and LLDA General Manager Nereus ‘Neric’ Acosta and DPWH Region 4 Director Huilio Belleza briefed President Aquino on the project that is part of DPWH’s Master Plan for Flood Management in Metro Manila and the Laguna Lake Region.

With a P780 million budget allocation approved by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board to address the impacts of flooding and natural disasters, both agencies will implement the construction and rehabilitation of river control structures like concrete slope protection works, sheet piling and grouted riprap on five rivers flowing into Laguna Lake. These are the Mabitac River (P300 million), Sta. Maria River (P100 M), Sta. Cruz River (P180 M), Biñan River (P100 M), and San Pedro River (P100 M).

The implementation of the flood control system will first start in Sta. Cruz River this year and is expected to benefit 17,896 persons from the areas of Santisima Cruz, Santo Angel Central, Santo Angel Norte and Poblacion 3.
