President Benigno S. Aquino III welcomed World Maritime University (WMU) President Dr. Bjorn Kjerfve in a courtesy call in Malacañang.

He was joined by Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya and Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Administrator Atty. Nicasio Conti.

According to Sec. Abaya, the general discussion focused mainly on seafarers and their role worldwide. He also said that many Filipinos have studied at WMU and their number is third highest next to China and Nigeria. There were also talks on soliciting support from the private sector, particularly ship owners, if they can possibly contribute in funding scholarships for Filipinos who want to study in the university.

Dr. Kjerfve also extended his invitation to President Aquino to be the guest of honor for the school’s graduation in November this year.

The World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden is a postgraduate maritime university founded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.
