President Benigno S. Aquino III, together with his fellow Heads of State/Government from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its Dialogue Partners, attended the 9th East Asia Summit (EAS)-Plenary Session on his second day of visit to Myanmar.
The discussion stressed the importance of EAS cooperation in order to maintain ASEAN’s centrality, tackled traditional and non-traditional issues which pose as challenges to peace and stability in the region, the strengthening of economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region to enhance regional integration, and improving people-to-people contact.
The leaders exchanged views regarding the reviewing of process of the EAS cooperation, non-traditional security issues, climate change, disaster management and issues of pandemic diseases.
Aside from the ASEAN Heads of State/Government and Dialogue Partners, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and Takehiko Nakao, President of the Asian Development Bank, were invited by the ASEAN chair to observe the session.
