“We have been blessed not only with persevering and valorous people. Our own natural resources furnished us with both sustenance and the means for our own self-defense. And as fate would have it, the battle was initially lost, but the war would eventually be won,” President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated as he led the commemoration of the 82nd Anniversary of the Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) dubbed, ‘Honoring Veterans’ Valor: Foundation for a United Filipino People’, at the Mt. Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan.

In his keynote message, the President emphasized the profound significance of the Araw ng Kagitingan, highlighting that its importance transcends mere observance by law or presidential decree. Rather, it is a testament to the shared heritage and history of the Filipino people, commemorating the brave actions of compatriots who fought valiantly in defense of the nation.

He underscored the Day of Valor as a tribute to the Filipino soldiers who bravely stood alongside international allies during World War II. Particularly poignant was his recognition of the more than 60,000 soldiers who endured the harrowing ordeal of the Fall of Bataan, facing humiliation, deprivation and brutality at the hands of the enemy.

The Commander in Chief also expressed gratitude to the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as to the survivors who bore witness to the atrocities of war. Their courage and resilience, he noted, epitomize the noble cause for which they fought – the defense of Philippine honor and territory.

Beyond mere commemoration, the Fall of Bataan serves as a timeless reminder of the nation’s unity and resilience in the face of adversity, according to the President, symbolizing the enduring spirit and commitment of the Filipino people to upholding sovereignty and independence.

Looking to the future, he emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the events of 1942 and the subsequent victory in 1945. He also called upon the youth and future generations to emulate the bravery and patriotism of their forebears, urging them to resist oppression and uphold national unity.

“May we all be inspired by their unbreakable will, unflappable courage, and undying patriotism. The spirit that made Bataan stand cannot and must never, ever fail,” President Marcos Jr. concluded in his speech.
