6 May 2012

President Benigno S. Aquino III joined veterans, tourists and members of the cabinet as they commemorate the seventieth Fall of Corregidor.

In his first visit to the Island of Corregidor President Aquino paid homage to the fallen soldiers Filipino and Americans who stood firm in fighting for Freedom and territory against the then imperial Japanese forces. He also toured the historical markers in the island together with some members of his cabinet.

In his speech the President said that the commemoration is one way of paying tribute to the strength of spirit and patriotism presented by the Filipinos and Americans as brothers in arms. The President also disclosed that he plans to name second Hamilton Class Cutter after Commodore Ramon Alcaraz, the naval officer responsible for gunning down three Japanese “Zero” fighters using his motor torpedo boats known as Q-112 Abra. Adding that the truest tribute we can offer to those who have sacrificed their lives is by giving them a nation capable of protecting itself. He also reminded that partnerships and brotherhoods are formed not only in moments of triumph but also in times of adversity.
