People Power Monument, EDSA
25 February 2012
President Benigno S. Aquino III led this year’s celebration of the 26th EDSA People Power Revolution and rekindled the historical event with a re-enactment of the 1986 “Salubungan” at EDSA.
With this year’s theme: “Tagumpay ng Bayan: Anong Taya Mo Para sa Pilipinas Natin?” the event recognized two exemplary youths who displayed remarkable dedication in improving the lives of impoverished Filipinos by spearheading the One Million Lights Philippines. Mark Benjamin Y. Lozano and Catherine Felicia Marie A. Peralta have distributed 3,000 solar-powered lights around the country as they campaign for safe and eco-friendly light source that will replace the traditional “kerosene”.
Filipinos present during the celebration were also made to make their own pledges on how they can help unite the country by addressing today’s pressing social problems.
In his message, President Aquino urged the Filipinos to move forward and take action in protecting what millions of Filipinos fought for during the 1986 people power revolt. “Obligasyon nating alagaan ang ginintuang butil ng demokrasya na ipinunla ng milyun-milyong Pilipinong nagmartsa sa EDSA. Hindi ito lalago kung ito’y binabalewala” he said.
