President Benigno S. Aquino III joined his fellow ASEAN leaders at the start of the Plenary Session on the first day of the 25th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits held at the Myanmar International Convention Center (MICC).
Regional and international issues of common interest and concern is on top of the agenda, particularly the ones that have significant impact on peace and stability in the region such as the South China Sea issue.
Another important topic that will be tackled are the best approaches to position ASEAN strategically in the midst of shifting regional landscape both in terms of geo-economics and geo-politics. The leaders are expected to continue the discussion on enhancing the region’s centrality and credibility in the evolving regional architecture, and engagement with external partners.
Likewise, the ASEAN leaders are expected to adopt the ASEAN Joint Statement on Climate Change 2014.
