President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and his fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders discussed several matters relative to developing deeper cooperation with the Republic of Korea headed by President Yoon Suk-yeol during the 23rd ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

These areas included “digital economy, science and technology, disaster management, public health, smart cities and innovation, sustainable development, environment and climate change, connectivity, tourism, capacity building and human resource development.” (https://asean.org/)

The Chief Executive pointed out the Philippines’ interest for cooperation on maritime concerns stipulated in the ASEAN-ROK Plan of Action for 2021-2025 that focuses more on safety and security, search and rescue, freedom of navigation and overflight, exercise of self-restraint, non-use of force and peaceful resolution of disputes, especially with the Philippines being an archipelago.

He also looked forward to the implementation of the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025 and the Masterplan for ASEAN Connectivity 2025 towards regional digital transformation for the benefit of the ASEAN Community.
