On the last day of his participation in the 35th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and the ASEAN Leaders met with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan in the 22nd ASEAN–Japan Summit held at Nonthaburi, Thailand.
This year’s host country leader and ASEAN Chair Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha of the Kingdom of Thailand conveyed that the Summit is a good opportunity for both ASEAN and Japan to advance their strategic partnership and continue to promote ASEAN’s vision that “no one will be left behind”.
In response, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed Japan’s support to the AOT in the Indo-Pacific where ASEAN is at the center. He also emphasized the roles of both ASEAN and Japan in enhancing connectivity and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Likewise, the Japanese Prime Minister called on the ASEAN Leaders to send their athletes to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics that his country shall be hosting.
