Participation of President Benigno S. Aquino III in the 24th ASEAN Summit
Nay Pyi Taw, Republic of the Union of Myanmar
10-11 May 2014

President Benigno S. Aquino III is scheduled to head to Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar to participate in the 24th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit from May 10-11, 2014.

With the ultimate goal of reaching a peaceful and prosperous ASEAN community, this year’s summit has the theme “Moving Forward in Unity to a Peaceful and Prosperous Community,” setting the priority areas for the implementation of the ASEAN Community, reviewing the community building status, carrying out the review of the ASEAN Charter and transforming ASEAN as a people-centered organization while promoting programs that would further promote ASEAN’s external relations.

This is Myanmar’s first opportunity to host the gathering of leaders for the summit after 17 years since it joined ASEAN. The country’s political, economic and administrative reforms since 2011 have made it possible for Myanmar to play an active role in regional and international affairs, according to its foreign policy stipulated under the 2008 constitution.
