20th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM)

President Benigno S. Aquino III led the Philippine delegation at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Week in Russky Island, Vladivostok, Russia from September 8 to 9.

Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert del Rosario, Secretary of Trade and Industry Gregory Domingo, Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras, Secretary of Finance Cesar Purisima, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, Philippine Ambassador to the Russian Federation Alejandro Mosquera and Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for International Economic Relations Laura del Rosario were included in the delegation.

APEC this year is working under the motto “Integrate to Grow, Innovate to Prosper.” At the 20th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM), President Aquino and the rest of the APEC leaders discussed the four priorities set by the country host, Russia, for 2012: (1) trade and investment liberalization and regional economic integration, (2) strengthening food security, (3) establishing reliable supply chains, and (4) cooperation to foster innovative growth.

He participated in the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Dialogue with Leaders, which is a key feature of the AELM, since ABAC’s work program for the entire year and pressing concerns of the business community will be discussed.

Carrying the theme “Aspirations to Reality…”, ABAC’s 2012 work program focuses on regional economic integration, SMME and entrepreneurship and sustainable growth, particularly on the areas of transportation and logistics, technology transfer and green development and eco-cities.

ABAC Philippines is represented by A. Magsaysay Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Doris Magsaysay Ho, Jollibee Foods Corporation Chairman and CEO Tony Tan Caktiong, and Ayala Corporation Chairman and CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala.

APEC has 21 “member economies” that annually meet and work for economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region.
