President Rodrigo Roa Duterte graced the 2020 General Assembly of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) that carried the theme, ‘Linking Municipalities with Public and Private Partners in Development and Progress’, at the Marriott Hotel in Pasay City.

In his message, President Duterte discussed his priority programs for the remaining years of his term, such as reconfiguring projects of the national government so that the local government units (LGUs) can have project allocation, and the continuous campaign to address insurgency, terrorism, illegal drugs and corruption both in the public and private sectors.

“I must admit that these projects are not mine alone.  Some were started during my predecessors’ days but completed during my term.  Pero para sa akin, okay na ‘yon.  I can give the credit to them for I never started it.  And just finishing it is no big deal for anyone.  Ang gusto ko lang sana sa last two years ko, if I can equitably distribute the money of the Republic to cover the entire Philippines on projects, malaki man or maliit, basta meron ang lahat,” the Chief Executive said.

He also assured the LMP officials of his full support as they advance the common good in their respective communities.  “Together, let us continue to embody solidarity and promote collaboration so that we may build a [stronger], healthier and more prosperous society,” he added.

The three-day assembly from March 9-11, 2020 gathered an overwhelming number of attendees composed of LMP officials and staff, local government officials and Cabinet Secretaries.

Created by virtue of Section 496 of Republic Act Number 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991, part of the LMP’s powers, functions and duties is to ‘assist the national government in the formulation and implementation of the policies, programs and projects affecting municipalities’ in the country, ‘promote local autonomy at the municipal level’ and ‘supplement the efforts of the national government in creating opportunities for gainful employment within the municipalities’.
