Together with his fellow ASEAN Heads of State/Government, President Benigno S. Aquino III participated in the 16th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit as the first day of the 23rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits gets underway in Brunei Darussalam.
President Park Geun-hye, the first female Chief Executive of South Korea, represented her country in the Summit aimed at further elevating dialogue relations between the two from comprehensive cooperation to strategic partnership. In order to concretize this, the Leaders adopted the Joint Declaration on ASEAN-ROK Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity and its Action Plan that covers the period of 2011-2015.
One of the initiatives that the Republic of Korea is pushing for is the “Low Carbon Green Growth” in dealing with climate change. In last year’s gathering, the Leaders expressed their keenness to closely cooperate on this by exchanging best practices and using environmental-friendly technology. South Korea expressed its commitment to supporting ASEAN Member States in this area by allocating US$100 million from its initiative on “East Asia Climate Partnership.”
