President Rodrigo Roa Duterte opened the 12th Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit with the primary goal of enhancing connectivity between the four nations’ sub-regions.
In his brief remarks, President Duterte reiterated the importance of BIMP-EAGA in the economic cooperation between the sub-regions of ASEAN. He added that it continues to play a key role in attaining the goals under the ASEAN integration.
The 12th BIMP-EAGA Summit focuses on four key priorities – enhancement of transport connectivity, private investments, trade, and increase in local government engagement. Such priorities will boost economic activities in the sub-region.
As transport connectivity continues to improve across the region, BIMP-EAGA will launch the Davao-GenSan-Bitung Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) in Davao City on April 30 (Sunday) that will provide faster shipping services for an easier trade of goods in the BIMP area.
Aside from this, the Summit discussed recent developments and the highlights of BIMP-EAGA through key economic indicators throughout the year.
President Duterte was joined by Brunei Darussalam Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Adbul Razak.
