![]() President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, together with the other leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), participates in the celebration of the ASEAN-Korea commemorative summit in the scenic southern resort island of Jeju on June 1-2.
This visit of President Arroyo is also made more meaningful by the celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Korea which was established in March 3, 1949. She has declared 2009 as the RP-ROK Friendship Year.
The ten leaders gather for the first time in Jeju to mark the 20th anniversary of the ASEAN-Korea relationship as each head of state/government share a special attachment to Korea. The summit is the most important event of the decade in Jeju and the sentiment of hope and solidarity are reflected in the summit's theme, "Partnership for Real, Friendship for Good".
The ASEAN heads of state and Korean President Lee Myung-bak are adopting a joint declaration on improving ASEAN-Korea relations in four vital areas – economic development, peace and security, society and culture and global issues.
The ASEAN member nations are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. (MDF/RJU)
